Cost of Government Day can account for the real federal, state and local taxes that are extracted from our wallets; it can calculate the costs of complying with various regulations at all levels; it can even estimate the annual hours and dollars spent complying with IRS tax law ($265 billion and 6 billion hours in 2005 alone); but it cannot account for the opportunity cost of all those dollars and hours consumed by government—the what might have been.
