You guys ridiculed what Jamie Pedersen (D-43) said, “the majority party should be allowed to govern, and the people have the right to boot us out every two years if they don’t like our approach.”
I can’t tell the whole context, but it sounds like representative democracy to me. Like Edmund Burke said, “Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays instead of serving you if he sacrifices it to your opinion.”
That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t listen, but it does mean that they make the decisions. Representatives are elected to represent you, and your opinion of whom you wish to represent you is expressed at the ballot box.
Of course, in between elections, you express your wishes too, and they should listen … but in the end, they make the decisions. That’s all I took from Peterson’s quote.
Agreed, however, the people spoke to him when they passed I-960, asking him to only raise taxes with a 2/3rd majority. We have townhall meetings and such with our representatives because they often become out of touch with our desires.
This is a good point you make, and i think it warrants a good discussion in our next Get Free.
